What fun for us , ( my family spent many many years in N Pomfret, just out side of Woodstock) we had such a great group of friends from Woodstock and so many fun skiing weekends and vacations on Suicide Six the neighboring ski hill. To hear about that fabulous old inn was such fun and such fun to hear about its history. And! Thanks So much for sloothing into Samuel Rich’s family! You’re amazing! ❤️Celina mum
The Woodstock Inn brings back many happy memories to this Dartmouth 69 graduate. Dinner there was always an extremely extravagant treat – and therefore saved for very special occasions like trying to complete the "snow job" on one's Winter Carnival date. The hardest part of the evening was always the slightly treacherous drive back to Hanover on the dark winter's night after a few bottles of wine.
There wasn't too much trouble that a ten year old boy could find at those parties, but the drive back up to North Bridgewater was no less problematic for the assorted parents, aunts, and uncles crammed into my family's Ford Fairlane station wagon. It's actually quite remarkable that they made it back from those adventures.
Susan Bull Riley and Sally Smith are the Vermont artists I am trying to share your blog with and will love this piece about Wilder -- I will keep trying to connect the dots!
What a "cool" guy with not only his invention of the refrigerated box car, but the coupon and helping us see so much color in the snow! What a great reminder that every contribution counts -- sure it is great to have the patent, but more in this open source more distributed world we are moving toward (I hope) it is great to be reminded of the creativity and ingenuity of the human spirit. I will check out the south Deerfield historical society in case there is any more on him the next time I am down there. His paintings remind me of a great artist up here -- I share your blog with her now. Thank you again for opening our eyes to a whole new palette!
Jonas Wilder might actually be more interesting than his sons but he's arguably an anti-hero as far as the locally sourced food movement is concerned! The fascinating thing about Arthur is the wide spectrum of his painting - from magnificent to beyond awful. Thanks for the blog share - if she has a website I would love to see it.

I'm just old enough to remember some spectacular parties at the inn, but not so old as to have been more than a spectator. Probably a good thing!
